Washio Atago Shrine

Washio Atago Shrine stands on the summit of Mount Atago in Fukuoka's Nishi Ward. Traditionally counted among Japan's three major Atago shrines, it is associated with protection from fire and also offers elevated views towards Hakata Bay, Momochihama and Fukuoka Tower.

Access on foot
From Muromi subway station Exit 1, the official estimate is a 15–20 minute walk. Nishitetsu buses stop at Atago Jinja-mae and Atago-shita, followed by a walk of roughly 10–20 minutes. The final approach includes slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable shoes and allow extra time.
When to visit
The shrine can be combined with the Muromi River, Fukuoka Tower, Momochi Seaside Park or Meinohama. Daylight makes the route easier to follow and is better for first-time visitors; sunset and night views require more care on the hill.
Seasonal crowds
New Year, Setsubun and the cherry-blossom season can be busy. Check the shrine's latest notice for ceremonies or access changes, and keep paths clear for worshippers.
