Kokuraminami Ward, Kitakyushu

Kokuraminami Ward covers the southeastern part of Kitakyushu, from residential districts and Kitakyushu Airport to the rural landscapes around Hiraodai. It is especially rewarding for limestone scenery, caves, walking and other outdoor activities.

Highlights
Hiraodai is one of Japan's notable karst plateaus, with white limestone formations, grassland trails and caves. The ward also includes the Sone tidal flats, waterfalls, parks and agricultural areas, so the experience changes considerably between the coast and the hills.
Getting around
Rail and monorail serve the more urban parts of the ward, while many nature sites are easier to reach by car. Public transport to Hiraodai and rural destinations can be limited or seasonal; check the outward and return journey before setting off.
Prepare for nature
Choose footwear for uneven paths, carry water and check weather or trail notices. The related English articles below help you compare destinations and decide how much time each area needs.
