Tochoji Temple

Tochoji is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Hakata Old Town, one minute from Gion subway station. Its main sights are the 10.8-metre wooden Fukuoka Daibutsu, a red five-storey pagoda, the hexagonal Rokkakudo hall and graves of several Kuroda lords.

Visitor information
The grounds normally open 9:00–17:00, while entry to the Daibutsu ends at 16:45. Admission to the grounds and the Great Buddha is free. Allow 30–45 minutes for the main sights.
Fukuoka Daibutsu
The passage inside the statue's pedestal includes depictions of Buddhist hells followed by a completely dark corridor. Hold the handrail and move slowly; visitors uncomfortable with darkness or confined spaces may skip it.
Getting there and etiquette
Use Exit 1 at Gion Station, or walk about 15 minutes from Hakata Station. Tochoji remains an active temple: obey signs for photography and restricted areas, and avoid disturbing ceremonies.
