Tagawa District is a rural area of inland Fukuoka comprising six towns—Kawara, Soeda, Itoda, Kawasaki, Oto and Fukuchi—and the village of Aka. The wider area combines mountain scenery, railway and coal-mining heritage, hot springs and local roadside stops.
Choosing an areaSoeda is the gateway to Mount Hiko, while Oto is known for its large roadside-station complex. Aka and Fukuchi offer countryside, hot-spring and railway outings. Because the district is broad, choose one or two neighbouring areas rather than trying to cover every municipality in a day.
Getting around
JR and the Heisei Chikuho Railway serve parts of the district, but stations and sights can be far apart. A car is usually the most flexible choice. If travelling by train, check the return timetable first and allow time for local buses or taxis.
